Tomorrow is the big day, Super Bowl Sunday! The Indianapolis Colts verses the New Orleans Saints. I had a tough time in deciding which team to cheer for. But after tossing and turning in bed, I decided to pick the Saints. Why the Saints? First of all, they are considered the underdogs in this matchup, and America always cheer for the underdogs. But besides their less favored win, New Orleans as a state suffered so much. No one needs to explain the catastrophic damages caused by Hurricane Katrina and the despair in the people of New Orleans. However, they were able to overcome their hardships and the sport of football definitely played a part in lifting the spirits of the people. I remember I saw a image of the streets in New Orleans when they won the championships. Everyone was smiling. Despite the abandoned buildings and dirty roads, the people joined together with smiles on their faces. If football can influence the people of a state, how much would the unconditional love of the Lord and Savior bring upon the world? Something so divine ought to lift anyone up from their despair, physically and spiritually.
Enough of the spiritual insight in the glorious sport of football in which for some reason I became extremely interested in this past year, the reason I put a picture of the Colts, even though I am in favor of the Saints, is because of the picture itself.
Peyton Manning, I just found out that he is also referred as P-Money, is a great quarterback. No one can disagree with that. But one person who is always in the shadows of the limelight is the center, Jeff Saturday. I just read an article that the Colts are planning to extend the contract of Saturday and Manning. Why did the Colts decided to extend both of their contracts? It is because they have such great chemistry and teamwork. The article said, “Saturday and Manning had started 154 games together, just shy of the record set by Jim Kelly and Kent Hull of the Buffalo Bills.”
The quarterback would be rendered useless without a good center. I know someone would mention that principle could also apply to the rest of the football team. Yes, that is true. But the center and the quarterback are generally always the closest to each other on every down. And plus, the quarterback has to touch the center’s butt all the time!
Now, I know I’m still a novice in the sport of football but there something admirable in that picture. The quarterback and center are pointing at the same thing, the same threat or the same opportunity. Both their minds think alike. Both are on the same heartbeat of the game. You can sense true greatness when one man is in sync and fluent with another man.
I can only image how much greater it would be when man is in sync with God. When man’s heartbeat beats the same as his Lord’s. When man acts, it is as if God Himself is acting the very same thing. That has been on my mind and heart for quite some time. I know that I hunger for something like that.
GO SAINTS!
